Five quick fixes for a website that is not pulling its weight

Five quick fixes for a website that is not pulling its weight: make your phone number and a contact button visible on every screen, say what you do and where in the first few seconds, make sure it loads fast and works on a phone, add recent proof that you are real and good, and give Google something fresh to see. None of these need a rebuild. You could do most of them this week, and any one of them can move the needle.
I run Clixoni, and before anyone spends money replacing a whole site, I always look for the cheap wins first. Most underperforming sites are not broken. They are leaking, in a handful of predictable places. Here are the five I check, roughly in the order of how much they tend to cost you.
1. Put the way to contact you everywhere
The single most common leak is a contact route that is hard to find. The phone number tucked in the footer, the enquiry form three clicks deep, no button on the pages people actually land on. Fix it by putting a clear way to make contact at the top, in the middle and at the bottom of every page, and by making the phone number a tappable link on mobile. A visitor decides they are ready at an unpredictable moment. Whenever that is, the button needs to be right in front of them, or they leave.
2. Answer the "what and where" in five seconds
A stranger lands on your site and gives it a few seconds to answer two questions: what do you do, and do you cover me. If your homepage opens with a vague slogan instead of a plain statement of the work and the area, you lose them. Fix it by writing, in ordinary words, exactly what you do and where you do it, right at the top. Clever wording impresses nobody who is in a hurry. Clarity keeps them reading. This is one of the fundamentals I covered in the five things that decide whether your website brings in enquiries.
3. Fix the phone experience
Most of your visitors are on a phone, and a lot of sites still treat mobile as an afterthought. If yours is slow to load, needs pinching to read, or has buttons too small to tap, you are failing the majority of the people who see it. Open your own site on your own phone, on mobile data not wifi, and time it. If you are waiting more than a couple of seconds or squinting, that is fixable, and it is costing you every day.

A site with no reviews, no recent photos and no faces asks the visitor to take you on trust, and cold visitors do not. Fix it by adding genuine customer reviews, real photos of real work, and something that shows a person behind the business. It does not need to be slick. It needs to be true. A couple of honest testimonials and some real photos will do more for your enquiries than another round of design polish, and I explained why credibility works this way in looks credible or looks cheap, what your website says about you.
5. Give Google a reason to keep visiting
A site that never changes slowly slides down the rankings. The fix is a steady trickle of fresh activity: a post, an updated Google Business Profile, a new photo, a reply to a review. You do not need a torrent. You need a heartbeat. Start it this month and Google gradually reads you as an active business worth ranking, which over time is the fix that keeps on giving. I made the fuller case in the one thing most businesses skip that kills their rankings.
The honest tradeoff
These five are genuinely quick, but quick is not the same as permanent. Fixing the contact buttons and the mobile speed stays fixed. The last one, giving Google fresh activity, is not a one-off, it is a habit, and it is the one that quietly slips the moment you get busy. So four of the five you can do this week and forget. The fifth you have to keep doing, forever, which is exactly the piece most owners drop. Be honest with yourself about whether you will keep it up.
One more honest note on the order. If you can only face one of the five this week, make it the first, the contact buttons. It is the fastest to do and usually the most expensive to leave broken, because it fails people who had already decided to get in touch. A visitor who cannot find your website is a shame. A visitor who wanted to contact you and could not work out how is a genuine loss, because you had them and let them slip. Fix the way people reach you before you touch anything else, and you will often see a difference from that alone.
What should you do with this?
Go through the five today, on your phone, and be ruthless. Most sites fail two or three, and the fixes are far cheaper than the rebuild owners assume they need. Do the quick ones yourself if you have the time. For the fifth, the ongoing one, decide honestly whether it will get done or quietly slide. If it will slide, that steady upkeep is exactly what we run for £350 a month, so the fixes stay fixed. Read how it works on the Growth Engine page, or book a short call with Mark and I will run through your own site and tell you which of the five it is failing.
