Traffic is up but enquiries are flat: what to check

If your website traffic is climbing but enquiries are flat, the problem is almost never traffic. It is that the wrong people are arriving, or the right people are arriving and then hitting friction that stops them contacting you. More visitors to a site that does not convert just means more people leaving. Before you chase even more traffic, check five things: who the visitors are, whether the site is clear, whether contacting you is effortless, whether the site works on a phone, and whether you are measuring the right thing in the first place.
Rising traffic feels like progress, which is why this one is so frustrating. The number on the dashboard goes up and the phone stays quiet.
Are you getting the right visitors?
Start here, because it is the most common answer. Traffic is not one thing. A spike from the wrong search terms, another town, or people looking for something you do not sell will lift your numbers and never enquire, because they were never going to. If a page about a topic you do not really offer is pulling crowds, that is vanity traffic. It looks great and does nothing. The fix is to make sure you are found for what people search when they are ready to buy locally, not for whatever happens to attract clicks.
Is the site clear within a few seconds?
A visitor who cannot quickly tell what you do, who you do it for and where, leaves. If your homepage opens with a slogan and a stock image instead of the plain facts, even the right person bounces because they are not sure they are in the right place. Clarity is a conversion tool. Say the obvious thing at the top and you keep more of the people you worked to attract.
Is it effortless to make contact?
This is where enquiries quietly die. A phone number that is not tappable on mobile. A form with too many fields. A contact option buried at the bottom. No way to get a quick answer to a simple question. Every extra step loses people who were willing to enquire. Adding a chat that answers straight away, like the visitor engagement we build in as standard, often lifts enquiries with no extra traffic at all, because it catches the people who had a question and would otherwise have left.

Most of your visitors are on one. If the site is slow, the text is small, or a button is hard to tap, they give up, and they do it silently. Test your own site on your own phone, on mobile data, the way a customer would. If it is fiddly or slow, you have found a leak that no amount of extra traffic will fix.
A worked example of a leak
A tiler came to me convinced he needed more visitors. His traffic had genuinely doubled over a few months and his enquiries had not moved at all, so his instinct was to pour more into getting found. We looked before spending a penny on traffic. Two things jumped out. First, a chunk of the new visitors were arriving on a page about a material he barely worked with, from searches in a city he did not cover, so they were never going to enquire. Second, the people who were right for him were hitting a contact form that demanded a full address and a preferred start date before it would send, and most were giving up at that point. He did not have a traffic problem. He had a wrong-visitor problem stacked on top of a friction problem, and buying more clicks would have made the first one worse.
The fix cost nothing in extra traffic. We made sure he was found for the work he actually wanted, in the areas he actually covered, and we cut the form down to a name, a number and a short message. The same site, with the same or fewer visitors, started turning them into calls. That is almost always how this goes. The dashboard was measuring the wrong success, and the real answer was hiding in the gap between arriving and enquiring.
Check them in this order
- Visitor quality: are the right people arriving, or is a vanity page pulling the wrong crowd?
- Clarity: does the top of the page tell a stranger what you do, who for and where?
- Friction: how many steps stand between wanting to enquire and actually doing it?
- Mobile: does it genuinely work, fast, on a phone on mobile data?
- Measurement: are you counting every call, message and chat, or only the ones that reach a form?
The measurement trap
One honest possibility worth naming: you might be getting enquiries you are not counting. A call that does not get logged. A message through your Google Business Profile. A chat handled and forgotten. Before you conclude nothing is working, make sure you are actually capturing every way someone reaches you. Sometimes the pipeline is fuller than the spreadsheet.
What to do next
Do not answer flat enquiries with a plan to buy more traffic. Fix the leak first. Check the visitor quality, the clarity, the friction, the mobile experience and the measurement, in that order. Nine times out of ten the answer is in there. If you would rather someone found the leak for you, book a short call, or see how the Growth Engine keeps traffic and conversion moving together rather than one without the other.
