Managed vs DIY

The real cost of doing your own SEO and content

The real cost of doing your own SEO and content

The real cost of doing your own SEO and content is not the software. It is the ten to fifteen hours a month it quietly takes, priced at what your time is actually worth. For an owner billing GBP60 or more an hour, that is GBP600 to GBP900 of your most valuable time spent on the work you are slowest at, and that is before you count the months it takes to get any good at it.

I run Clixoni. I have spent three years building websites and running marketing for owner-led businesses, and this is the sum nobody adds up before they start. The tools are cheap. The hours are where it gets expensive.

What does doing your own SEO actually involve?

More separate jobs than most owners expect. You research what your customers type into Google. You write pages that answer those searches without sounding like filler. You handle the on-page work so a page has a fair chance of ranking. You keep your Google Business Profile active with posts, photos and answered questions. You ask happy customers for reviews and reply to them. You earn the odd link from a local site that carries weight. Then you do it again next month, because none of it holds if you stop.

Each of those is a small skill on its own. Put together, they are a part-time job. And a part-time job is exactly what most owners do not have room for.

So what is it really costing me?

Three things, and only one of them shows up as a bill. The first is the time, ten to fifteen hours in a serious month. The second is the opportunity cost of that time, because the hour you spend fighting with a heading tag is an hour you did not spend quoting, selling or looking after a customer. The third is the slow ramp. Your first six months of content and SEO are your worst, so you are paying full price for beginner output while a competitor who handed it over is already three months into a steady rhythm.

That is the false economy. On the price tag, DIY looks free. Measured in your own hours and the work those hours displace, it is usually the most expensive route an owner can take. I wrote more about that trap in why busy owners should not run their own marketing.

But surely the tools do most of the work now?

They do some of it, and I use them daily. AI can draft a page in seconds and take the blank-screen pain out of writing. What it cannot do on its own is decide what is worth writing, keep a consistent voice across a whole year, judge whether a page is honest and useful, and make sure the work keeps happening on the days you are flat out. Left to run alone it produces bland, samey pages that read like everyone else's. The value is in the person steering it, and steering it well is another skill to learn on top of all the rest.

The honest tradeoff

I will say the thing an agency usually will not. If you genuinely enjoy this work and you can protect the hours every single week, do it yourself. Some owners can, and they save the fee. Most cannot, and what actually happens is a strong burst in month one, a thinner month two, and a Google Business Profile that has not been touched since spring. Be honest about which owner you are before you commit your own time to it.

What this looks like for a real business

Take a kitchen joiner I know. He is genuinely good, booked weeks out, and he decided to run his own content to save the fee. Month one he wrote four pages and set up his profile on a wet Sunday, and it looked great. Month two a big fit-out ran long and he wrote nothing. By month four the profile had not been touched, the pages had gone stale, and the one competitor in the next town who kept plodding along had quietly climbed above him. He had not done anything wrong. He had run out of the one thing the work needs, which is a spare evening every week that a busy tradesman almost never has.

When we sat down and put a real number on it, the picture was plain. He bills GBP65 an hour. The twelve hours a month he was spending on content, when he found them at all, were worth close to GBP780 of his own time, and those were the hours he would otherwise have spent quoting the jobs that actually pay. The tools had cost him almost nothing. The rhythm had cost him a fortune, and he had not even managed to keep it.

What I would do instead

Put a number on your own hour, multiply it by twelve hours a month, and compare that with the cost of having it run for you. For most of the businesses I work with, having it handled comes in below the true cost of doing it themselves, and it removes the part that always slips: consistency. That is the whole idea behind the Growth Engine, a professional website plus the daily marketing system that keeps it earning, run for you at £350 a month, with no tools to buy and no one to hire.

If you would rather your time went into the business and not into a keyword tool, book a short call with Mark and I will show you exactly what the system would run for your business. You can also read how the pieces fit together on the digital marketing page. The goal is simple: stop paying for your marketing with the hours you cannot spare.
