What Drives Enquiries

Why your Google Business Profile matters more than your logo

Why your Google Business Profile matters more than your logo

For most local businesses, your Google Business Profile matters more than your logo, your colours or your homepage hero. It is the panel that shows up on the right of a Google search and inside Google Maps, with your hours, photos, reviews and a call button, and for a lot of buyers it is the only thing they look at before they phone. A tired logo has never lost anyone a job. A neglected Business Profile loses them every week.

I am not against good branding. I build it. But if I could only fix one thing for a local business tomorrow, it would be the profile, every time.

Why does it beat the website so often?

Because it sits directly in the moment of decision. Someone searches "electrician near me" or your trade plus your town, and Google shows a short list with stars, photos and a tap-to-call. Many people choose from that panel without ever opening a website. If your profile is thin, out of date, or missing photos while a competitor's is full and active, they call the competitor. The website never even gets a look.

It is also the closest thing to a free head start Google gives a small business. It costs nothing to claim and nothing to keep active. The catch is the second word: active.

What makes a profile actually pull enquiries?

A few things, done regularly rather than once:

  • The basics dead right: exact business name, correct categories, real hours, a tappable number, service areas that match where you work.
  • Real photos, refreshed. Recent shots of your work, your van, your premises, your team. Not stock. Buyers can smell stock, and a profile with genuine, current photos reads as a genuine, current business.
  • Reviews, and replies to them. A steady flow of recent reviews, each one answered like a human, does more for trust than any tagline you will ever write.
  • Posts. Google lets you post updates, offers and news. A profile that gets posts looks alive. One that has not moved in a year looks closed.
  • Answered questions. People ask things on your profile. Silence is a bad look. A prompt answer is a small, visible sign that you turn up.

Is it not a set-and-forget thing?

That is the most common and most expensive mistake. People claim the profile, fill it in once, and never touch it again. Then they wonder why the shiny competitor two streets over gets the calls. The profiles that win are the ones that get a little attention every week: a new photo, a post, a review chased, a question answered. It is not hard. It is just relentless, and relentless is exactly what a busy owner cannot promise.

The two profiles buyers compare

Here is what actually happens in the moment that decides it. Someone needs a plumber, searches, and Google hands them three businesses side by side. Yours has a couple of photos from a while back, four reviews, the newest from last year, and no replies. The one below yours has fifteen recent photos of real jobs, a steady run of reviews all answered like a person wrote them, and a post from this week. You do the same work. You might even be better. But the buyer cannot see your work, only your profile, and the profile next to yours simply looks more alive. They tap it. You never knew you were in the race.

That is the uncomfortable truth about the profile. It is not judged on its own. It is judged against whoever is sitting next to you in the results, and the person who keeps theirs active wins a comparison you did not know you were part of. A tradesman I know doubled the calls coming off his profile without changing his prices, his van or his skills. All he changed was that the photos became recent and the reviews got answered. The work was identical. The shop window was not. And the beauty of it is that none of what he did was hard or clever. He simply stopped treating the profile as something he had finished and started treating it as something he kept, in the same small way you keep a shop tidy or a van clean because you know customers are looking.

A five-minute profile check

  • Are your name, categories, hours and phone number exactly right, and is the number tappable on a phone?
  • Are the photos genuine and recent, or stock and stale?
  • When did the last review come in, and did you reply to it?
  • When did you last post an update, and does the profile look active this month?
  • Has anyone asked a question that is still sitting there unanswered?

The honest tradeoff

Keeping a profile genuinely active takes time you may not have, and the payoff is steady rather than instant. You will not see a surge the day you add three photos. Over a couple of months of consistent activity, though, an active profile quietly climbs and gets chosen more often. This is a big part of what our managed system runs for you, alongside the website and the wider local marketing, so the profile never goes stale in a busy month.

What to do this week

Search your own business the way a customer would, on your phone, and look hard at your profile. Are the photos recent and real? When was the last review, and did you reply? When did you last post? If the honest answer is "a while ago", that is your quickest win available, and it is worth more than a new logo. If you would rather have it handled and kept alive, book a short call and we will start with exactly this.
